A Study on Body-image in Women with Stress Incontinence

Abstract
This study was done to determine body-image with stress incontinence(St) and the differences of general characteristics, obstetrical history and SI related variables between stress incontinence women and normal women. The design for study was a descriptive study. The number of subjects consisted of 156 women¡¯s who was selected by the systematic random sampling in Kwangju city. Data collected was done with the modified Secord and Jourard¢¥s Body-image Scale and Hendrickson¢¥s Stress Incontinence Scale(1981) which was analyzed using frequency, percentiles, t-test and ANOVA.
The results were as follows
1. The stress incontinence(SI) rate of women was 64.1% and the majority of women(83.3%) had experienced SI within the period of five years(the mean period was 2.7 years) without any treatment or care(83.3%). Items on the Sl scale had the score range from 4 to 44 and the mean score was 13.7 which showed mild SI.
2. The body-image score of SI women was 2.40 points and the normal women was 2.54 points.
3. There were significant differences in body-image from age. education, job and income between SI women and normal women. The older, the lower educated and the lower income in SI women was, the lower score was body-image.
4. There were significant differences in body-image from age of last delivery, age of last baby, number of vaginal delivery between SI women and normal women. There were no significant differences in body-image from number of cesarean and vaginitis between SI women and normal women.
5. There were significant differences in body-image from severity, period, treatment of SI of the subjects.
It can be concluded that Sl in women was noted lower body-image than in normal women. There were significant differences in body-image from general characteristics, obstetrical history and Sl related variables between stress incontinence women and normal women. It is suggested that S1 problems in women can be decreased the body-image.
